Why GATE 2027 Is More Important Than Just an Entrance Exam
GATE is often described as an engineering entrance examination, but its usefulness is much wider than that. A valid GATE score can be used for admission to various postgraduate and doctoral programmes, subject to the eligibility and selection rules of the admitting institute.
Depending on the institute and programme, candidates may use their GATE score for M.Tech, M.E., MS, direct doctoral or doctoral-level opportunities. Some institutions also provide financial assistance to eligible candidates.
GATE scores are also used by several Public Sector Undertakings and other organizations for recruitment. However, one important distinction should be remembered: qualifying GATE itself does not guarantee a PSU job. Recruitment depends on the individual PSU's notification, discipline, score requirements, eligibility and selection process.
What Is New in GATE 2027?
This year's examination has several changes that candidates should know before filling the form. Simply copying last year's GATE application details can create mistakes.
| New / Important Change | What Candidates Need to Know |
|---|---|
| New RA Paper | Robotics and Automation (RA) has been introduced as a new GATE test paper. |
| Revised Syllabus | GATE 2027 syllabi have been revised. Candidates should prepare from the 2027 syllabus rather than relying blindly on older material. |
| DigiLocker | Registration through a verified DigiLocker account is mandatory for Indian nationals. |
| Paper Codes | Several sectional paper codes have been updated, particularly in XE, XH and XL. |
| Two-Paper Option | Candidates can appear in one or up to two papers, but only from the officially permitted combinations. |
| Live Photo | A live photograph is captured during registration, so candidates should have a suitable webcam or smartphone camera available. |
GATE 2027 Eligibility: Who Can Apply?
One of the biggest advantages of GATE is that the eligibility is broader than the name “Engineering” might suggest. The official GATE 2027 information states that candidates studying in the third or higher year of an eligible undergraduate programme, or candidates who have completed an approved degree programme in the specified disciplines, can appear.
| Educational Background | Who Can Apply? |
|---|---|
| Engineering / Technology | Students in the third or higher year of eligible undergraduate Engineering/Technology programmes or candidates who have completed the qualifying degree. |
| Architecture / Planning | Eligible candidates studying in or having completed the prescribed Architecture/Planning qualification. |
| Science | Eligible candidates from approved Science programmes, subject to the year/degree conditions. |
| Commerce | Eligible candidates from government-approved Commerce programmes can appear where the qualification conditions are satisfied. |
| Arts / Humanities | Eligible candidates from government-approved Arts/Humanities programmes can appear where the prescribed conditions are met. |
| Medical / Other Professional Programmes | Specific degree programmes such as certain medical/professional qualifications have their own year requirements. Candidates must check the official eligibility table. |
Can BA, B.Com and B.Sc Students Apply for GATE 2027?
Yes. This is one of the most useful details that many students miss.
The official GATE 2027 FAQ specifically confirms that a student currently studying in the third year or higher of a government-approved undergraduate programme in Engineering, Technology, Architecture, Science, Commerce, Arts or Humanities is eligible to appear.
Therefore, eligible third-year or higher students from courses such as B.A., B.Com. and B.Sc. should not assume that GATE is restricted only to B.E. or B.Tech students.
Is There Any Age Limit for GATE 2027?
The official FAQ also confirms that there is no restriction on the number of attempts. A candidate can appear for GATE multiple times, subject to meeting the applicable eligibility conditions for the examination.
GATE 2027 Application Fee
The application fee is charged per test paper. Candidates planning to appear in two papers need to consider the additional fee applicable to the second paper.
| Candidate Category | Regular Period | Extended Period |
|---|---|---|
| Female / SC / ST / PwD | ₹1,000 per paper | ₹1,500 per paper |
| All Other Candidates | ₹2,000 per paper | ₹2,500 per paper |

GATE 2027 Exam Pattern
GATE 2027 will be conducted as a Computer Based Test. Each paper is for a total of 100 marks and the examination duration is 3 hours.
| Feature | Details |
|---|---|
| Mode | Computer Based Test (CBT) |
| Duration | 3 Hours |
| Number of Papers | 30 |
| Total Questions | 65 |
| Total Marks | 100 |
| Question Types | MCQ, MSQ and NAT |
| Language | English |
| General Aptitude | Common section; 15 marks in the standard paper structure |
| Negative Marking | Applicable to wrong answers in MCQs; no negative marking for MSQ/NAT wrong answers |
Negative Marking: Read This Before You Start Preparation
GATE 2027 does not use the same negative-marking rule for every question type.
| Question Type | Negative Marking |
|---|---|
| 1-mark MCQ | 1/3 mark deducted for an incorrect answer |
| 2-mark MCQ | 2/3 mark deducted for an incorrect answer |
| MSQ | No negative marking for wrong answer(s) |
| NAT | No negative marking |
There is also no partial marking in MSQ questions. This makes accuracy and understanding more important than simply attempting every question.
How Many GATE Papers Can You Choose?
A candidate can appear in one paper or up to two papers. However, the second paper cannot be selected randomly. It must be one of the combinations officially permitted by GATE 2027.
The official website also warns that multiple applications can result in rejection of additional applications without refund of the paid fee.
New Robotics and Automation Paper – RA
One of the biggest changes in GATE 2027 is the introduction of the Robotics and Automation (RA) paper.
Students interested in robotics, automation, intelligent systems, control, mechanical systems and related interdisciplinary areas should check the new RA syllabus carefully rather than preparing only from older GATE papers.
The RA paper has its own structure and syllabus, so candidates should download the official 2027 syllabus before finalising their preparation plan.
GATE 2027 Syllabus: Do Not Prepare From an Old PDF
The official GATE 2027 website states that the syllabi have been revised. This is particularly important for candidates who started preparation using GATE 2026 material.
Old books and previous-year papers remain useful for practice, but the 2027 syllabus should be the master checklist. Before beginning topic-wise preparation, compare your study material with the official 2027 syllabus.
- Download the 2027 syllabus for your paper.
- Mark topics that were added or revised.
- Compare your old notes with the new syllabus.
- Do not ignore the General Aptitude section.
- Practise MCQ, MSQ and NAT separately.
- Use previous-year papers to understand question style, not to predict exact questions.
Mandatory DigiLocker Registration: The New Rule You Should Not Miss
For GATE 2027, registration through a verified DigiLocker account is mandatory for Indian nationals.
Important details such as the candidate's name, date of birth, verified mobile number, verified email ID, address and verified ID information are fetched through DigiLocker during the application process.
Documents and Information Required for GATE 2027
| Requirement | Details |
|---|---|
| DigiLocker | Verified DigiLocker account is mandatory for Indian nationals |
| Photo | Good-quality photograph; live photo is captured during registration |
| Signature | Clear scanned signature as per prescribed specifications |
| Valid Photo ID | The same verified ID must be produced in original at the examination centre |
| SC/ST Certificate | Required where applicable; prescribed digital/document requirements apply |
| PwD / UDID Certificate | Required for candidates claiming applicable PwD benefits |
| Dyslexia / Scribe Documents | Required where applicable according to the prescribed format |
| Academic Details | Degree, institute and qualifying programme information |
| Exam Paper | Selected GATE paper or permitted two-paper combination |
| Exam Cities | Six city choices from the same examination zone |
Live Photo: A Small Detail That Can Create a Big Problem
GATE 2027 registration includes live photo capture. Candidates should therefore have access to a computer with a webcam or a smartphone with a suitable front camera.
The official instructions advise candidates to capture their face in a well-lit area. Poor lighting, unclear images or an unsuitable camera setup can make the registration process unnecessarily difficult.
How to Apply for GATE 2027 Online?
- Create or update your verified DigiLocker account.
- Visit the official GATE 2027 website.
- Open the GOAPS application portal.
- Complete the registration process using the required verified details.
- Check your name and date of birth carefully.
- Enter your qualifying degree and institute details.
- Select the appropriate GATE paper.
- If required, select the permitted second paper combination.
- Choose six examination city preferences from the permitted zone.
- Complete photograph, signature and applicable document requirements.
- Pay the applicable application fee.
- Review every field before final submission.
- Submit the application.
- Save the final confirmation and payment details.
Six Examination City Choices: Why Are They Required?
GATE 2027 requires candidates to provide six examination city choices from the same zone. Many students select the first city and ignore the remaining options, but the remaining choices can become relevant if there is excessive demand for the first-choice city.
The GATE Committee also reserves the right to make operational changes to examination-city allocation. Therefore, choosing a city is a preference, not an absolute guarantee of the final allotted centre.
Can You Change Details After Submission?
GATE 2027 has a separate application rectification window scheduled from 14 October 2026 to 21 October 2026.
However, candidates should not intentionally submit incorrect information assuming that every field can later be changed. The safest approach is to verify the complete form before final submission.
GATE 2027: Common Mistakes Candidates Should Avoid
- Using an unverified DigiLocker account.
- Entering a name different from the verified photo ID.
- Ignoring the 2027 syllabus changes.
- Selecting an incorrect GATE paper.
- Choosing an impermissible two-paper combination.
- Submitting two separate applications for two papers.
- Uploading unclear certificates.
- Ignoring the original-ID requirement for the examination centre.
- Waiting until the final day for payment.
- Assuming GATE qualification automatically means PSU recruitment.
GATE 2027 Score Validity
The GATE 2027 score is valid for three years from the date of announcement of results. The result is scheduled to be announced on 19 March 2027.
However, score validity does not mean that every institute or PSU will accept an old score indefinitely. Admission and recruitment notifications can specify their own eligibility and score requirements.
GATE Score and M.Tech Admission
A GATE score can be used for admission to postgraduate programmes in eligible institutions, subject to the individual institute's admission rules.
Candidates should not assume that a GATE score alone guarantees admission to IITs, IISc, NITs or any particular university. Each institute can have its own qualifying-degree requirements, paper requirements, minimum marks, shortlisting rules and counselling process.
GATE Score and PSU Jobs: The Truth Candidates Should Know
GATE scores are used by several PSUs for recruitment, but there is no universal rule that every PSU recruits through GATE every year or that every GATE-qualified candidate receives a job.
A PSU may publish a separate recruitment notification mentioning the eligible GATE paper, year of score, category, age, qualification, cutoff or shortlisting process. Therefore, candidates interested in PSU recruitment should always read the specific PSU advertisement.
Who Should Consider GATE 2027?
- Students planning M.Tech or related postgraduate study.
- Candidates interested in research and doctoral programmes.
- Students targeting higher technical education at reputed institutions.
- Candidates interested in PSU recruitment opportunities that use GATE scores.
- Eligible third-year or higher undergraduate students from the approved disciplines.
- Working professionals who satisfy the eligibility conditions and want to use GATE for higher studies or career opportunities.
Who Should Not Apply Without Checking the Rules?
Candidates should not select a paper simply because it appears popular. The official website advises candidates to choose a paper appropriate to the discipline of their qualifying degree.
Similarly, candidates who want to appear in two papers must first verify that the selected pair is an officially permitted combination.
What Should You Do in the Remaining 15 Days?
| Time | Recommended Action |
|---|---|
| Today | Verify eligibility, create/update DigiLocker and decide the GATE paper. |
| Next 2–3 Days | Complete the registration and prepare the required documents. |
| Before 20 September | Finish payment and final submission if possible. |
| 21–26 September | Use this period as a safety buffer, not as your planned deadline. |
| 27 September | Regular registration closes without late fee. |
| After 27 September | Application remains possible only within the extended window with applicable late fee. |

Robotics and Automation Paper
GATE 2027 Syllabus
- Previous-year papers से question style समझें।
Registration के दौरान नाम, date of birth, mobile number, email ID, address और verified ID जैसी जानकारी DigiLocker से fetch की जाएगी।

| Requirement | |
|---|---|
| DigiLocker | Verified DigiLocker account |
| Photo | Good quality photograph और registration के दौरान live photo |
| Signature | Prescribed format में clear signature |
| PwD / UDID Certificate |
| Dyslexia/Scribe Certificate |
| Paper Details | Selected paper और applicable second-paper combination |
Live Photo
GATE 2027 Online Form
- Official GATE 2027 website
- GOAPS application portal
- Registration process
- Name और Date of Birth carefully verify करें।
- Application submit
GATE 2027 Form
- Unverified DigiLocker account
- Photo ID
- Unclear certificate upload
- Payment के लिए last day का इंतजार न करें।
M.Tech Admission
PSU की अलग recruitment notification में eligible GATE paper, score year, qualification, age, category और shortlisting rules दिए जा सकते हैं।
